Department of Ophthalmology

About

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that deals with the diseases of the eye. The specialty has grown tremendously over the last few years, and it is now possible to diagnose and treat a very large number of ocular diseases. Ophthalmology is one of the unique branches that encompasses both medical and surgical aspects in patient management. Advanced equipment and refined surgical techniques have enabled eye surgeons to achieve greater precision during surgeries. The advent of lasers has revolutionized the management of posterior segment diseases, most of which can now be easily and adequately treated.

The specialty is now subdivided into subspecialties, including Cornea, Lens, Uvea, Glaucoma, Squint, Oculoplasty, Retina, Neuroophthalmology, and Pediatric Ophthalmology, for better patient care. The department is housed in the OPD block on the second floor, featuring consultants' cabins and a resident cabin for examining OPD patients. Additionally, there are separate rooms for refraction, perimetry, fundus fluorescein angiography, and laser procedures.

The department boasts an Eye Bank and facilities for corneal transplantation. Postgraduate training was initiated in the department in the year 2019, and two MS students were admitted.
