Department of Physiology

About

Physiology is a Greek word (Physis: nature; Logos: discourse). The term was coined by Jean Fernel, a French Physician. 'Physiology' is the scientific study of the normal functioning of living systems. Human Physiology is concerned with the way the human system functions and contributes to the functioning of the human body as a whole.

At the undergraduate level, it is a subject of importance as it apprises the students about the functioning of the normal human body and forms the basis of medicine. The understanding of Physiology is thus absolutely essential for the study and practice of medicine. Diseased states can be viewed as Physiology “gone wrong” & for this reason, an understanding of Physiology is absolutely essential for the study and practice of medicine.

Apart from this, human physiology based on research activities is subdivided into applied and non-applied Physiology. Applied Physiology covers various streams like neurophysiology, renal physiology, respiratory physiology, skin physiology, sleep physiology and is studied at the postgraduate level. Non-applied Physiology, which undergraduate students are apprised of, comprises the basic study of Physiology.

The Department of Physiology was established as a part of the Medical College in 2011.
